Richard Siegal

Founder and artistic director of The Bakery (2005) and Ballet of Difference (2016). Recognized by a New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award, The German National Theater Faust Award, S.A.C.D. Prize, a Beaumarchais, The Mouson Award, and Optionsförderung für Tanz in München (2010) Richard Siegal has generated international attention for a body of work that includes performances, new media projects, workshops and publications.

 

He has been commissioned by festivals and venues including Festival d’Automne, Rencontres Chorégraphiques, Ircam, Centre Pompidou, YCAM, Tanz im August, Ballett Frankfurt, Danspace/NYC, Théâtre National de Chaillot, Munich DANCE biennial (2010-2017), Venice Biennale, Frankfurt Positions, and Ruhrtriennale (2015–2017).

 

His work with live musicians has led him to collaborate with Alberto Posadas (Glossopoeia), Diane Labrosse (Double Story), Lorenzo Bianchi (©oPirates, Homo Ludens, Black Swan, The World, Metric Dozen, Three Stages: Model, In Medias Res, El Dorado), Eric-Maria Couturier (Op.Infinity and Homo Ludens), Wolfgang Zamastil (Homo Ludens and As If Stranger), Arto Lindsay (Muscle), Hubert Machnik (Civic Mimic), and The Asassello String Quartet.

 

Collaborations with architects and architectural designers include work with François Roche (Civic Mimic), Virginie Mira (Stranger Trilogy, Glossopoeia), Peter Zuspan (Multinatural (blackout) and Muscle), Alexander Kada (Venice Biennale of Architecture), Konstantin Grcic (Unitxt, In a Landscape), Didier Faustino (Black Swan, The World), Mike Bouchet (Currencies and Collectives) .

 

Richard Siegal has been Artist/Choreographer-in-Residence at ZKM/Karlsruhe, Bennington College, The Baryshnikov Arts Center, the Forsythe company, Festspielhuaus Sanct Pölten, and Muffathalle/Munich. As a faculty member of the American Dance Festival, he curated the annual Forsythe Festival. Siegal is a MacDowell fellow and honorary member of The Bolshoi Ballet’s Benoit de la Danse.”
